Jamila’s lyric “the good news is, water made us” references Toni Morrison’s speech on how writers are like water, always searching for a way back to ourselves—the way rivers always run back to their source. The front of the Good News Notebook Tee features the first half of this lyric in block print and handwriting from Jamila’s notebook. The scribbled words and crossed out lines show the process she took to find the lyrics that would later become the album’s title. The back of the tee features the second half of the lyric in block print and Jamila’s handwritten name.
